Interferogram Movie - Small Radial Area (AVI)
Schlieren and interferometric visualization were used to study the fluid mechanics of pintel injector, which are used in highly throttleable rocket engines. This work was done with Jason S. Damazo, Brian L. Ventura, Kliulai Chow-Yee, Joseph E. Shepherd, Ioannis G. Mikellides (JPL), and David A. Vaughan (JPL).
Hexane Air Combustion - Schlieren Visualization
A mixture of 3.75% n-hexane in air at one atmosphere is ingnited by a glow plug on the bottom of the image.
This image was taken with the help of Brian L. Ventura and Kliulai Chow-Yee.

A mixture of 3.75% n-hexane in air at one atmosphere is ingnited by a glow plug on the bottom of the image. This image is taken as the flame front reaches the window of the vessel.
This image was taken with the help of Brian L. Ventura and Kliulai Chow-Yee.
Schlieren Movie - Single Flame Ignition (AVI)*
Schlieren Movie - Single Flame Ignition (QuickTime)*
A mixture of 3.75% n-hexane in air at one atmosphere is ingnited by a glow plug on the bottom and the flame propagates through the vessel.
A mixture of 6.48% n-hexane in air at one atmosphere is ingnited by a glow plug on the bottom of the image. This mixture creates a puffing flame with a frequency between 10 and 20 Hz.
This image was taken with the help of Brian L. Ventura and Kliulai Chow-Yee.

Another image of the puffing flame from a mixture of 6.48% n-hexane in air at one atmosphere.
This image was taken with the help of Brian L. Ventura and Kliulai Chow-Yee.
Schlieren Movie - Small Vessel Test (AVI)*
Schlieren Movie - Small Vessel Test (QuickTime)*
A mixture of 6.48% n-hexane in air at one atmosphere is ingnited by a glow plug on the bottom and the flame puffs as seen in this dark background schlieren video.
This video was taken with the help of Brian L. Ventura.
Schlieren Movie - Large Vessel Test (AVI)*
Schlieren Movie - Large Vessel Test (QuickTime)*
Schlieren visualization of the puffing flame in a 22 liter vessel. The puffing frequency is the same as in the small vessel test.
This video was taken with the help of Brian L. Ventura.
Hexane Air Combustion - CH* Chemiluminescence Visualization
CH* Chemiluminescence Movie (WMV)
Direct imaging of the flame through a bandpass filter at 450+/-10 nm Center, 70+/-30 nm FWHM. The mixture is 6.48% n-hexane in air at one atmosphere.
This video was taken with the help of Brian L. Ventura.

Direct imaging of the flame through a bandpass filter at 450+/-10 nm Center, 70+/-30 nm FWHM. In this experiment all ambient light was blocked off. The mixture is 6.48% n-hexane in air at one atmosphere.
This video was taken with the help of Brian L. Ventura.
CH* Chemiluminescence Movie (WMV)
CH* Chemiluminescence Movie (Quicktime)
Direct imaging of the flame through a bandpass filter at 450+/-10 nm Center, 70+/-30 nm FWHM. In this experiment all ambient light was blocked off. The mixture is 4.97% n-hexane in air at one atmosphere, which is reigniting instead of puffing.
This video was taken with the help of Brian L. Ventura.
